The Chartered Banker Institute is delighted to award Steve Hughes, Group Chief Executive of Coventry Building Society and The Co‑operative Bank an Honorary Fellowship. This recognises his leadership, and long-standing commitment to professionalism, responsible banking and ethical leadership rooted in mutual values.

Steve’s career exemplifies the principles that sit at the heart of the Institute’s mission. With more than two decades of experience in financial services and extensive board-level experience, his professional journey reflects the importance of sustained development, grounded in purpose, responsible leadership, cultural stewardship and a strong commitment to professional standards.

Steve places particular emphasis on developing colleagues, fostering inclusive cultures and supporting high standards across organisations and teams. His approach demonstrates how ethical principles and commercial discipline can work together to deliver sustainable outcomes for customers, institutions and society.

By helping to bridge banking and building society traditions, Steve’s leadership has supported the coming together of different financial models. This has been especially significant in returning The Co‑operative Bank to mutual ownership, reflecting a renewed emphasis on long‑term stewardship, trust and accountability.

Steve also contributes to the wider profession through a number of external sector roles, including with the Building Societies Association, the Money and Pensions Service, the Pennies Foundation and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) Practitioner Panel, supporting the development of policy, standards and good practice across financial services.

Chartered Banker Institute President Paul Denton FCBI said:
“Steve’s career demonstrates the value of professionalism in practice, combining strong commercial leadership with a clear commitment to purpose, inclusion and long-term stewardship. He reflects the standards our Institute exists to promote across the profession.”

Presenting the award, Chartered Banker Institute Chief Executive Tanya Retter said:

“We are delighted to welcome Steve Hughes as an Honorary Fellow of the Institute. His commitment to professional standards, responsible leadership and ethical practice strongly reflects the principles at the core of our Institute. He exemplifies the kind of leadership needed to support a trusted, resilient and sustainable banking profession.”

Upon receiving the Honorary Fellowship, Steve Hughes commented:

“What makes this recognition really meaningful to me is the role the Institute plays in opening doors to the profession – especially for people like me who haven’t taken a traditional route into financial services.

“Starting my career as an apprentice meant learning on the job and developing my skills over time and I benefitted from those who believed that talent and potential matter most, whatever you background. That belief is something that the Chartered Banker Institute has long championed - I’m proud to support this organisation and grateful to the Leadership Team and Trustees for this honour.”

As part of its 150th Anniversary, the Chartered Banker Institute is awarding 150 Honorary Fellowships to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the profession and who embody the values central to its mission.
