Overview

Community development finance institutions (CDFI's) and Credit Unions provide access to finance in a fair and transparent way that places people first.  Join us for this upcoming webcast whereby we will be discussing their importance in supporting responsible finance. We will be joined by Theodora Hadjimichael, Chief Executive, Responsible Finance and Marlene Shiels OBE, Chief Executive, Capital Credit Union and will delve into:

  • Vulnerbility - understanding the potential for vulnerability and the needs of those that become vulnerable
  • Importance of knowing your customer – how do CDFIs and Credit Unions combat fraud?
  • Product design – how do Credit Unions and CDFIs products and services align with the FCA’s Guidance on the Fair Treatment of Vulnerable Customers
  • Why “building back better”  and “levelling up” will require different business models to flourish.
  • The future for co-ops, social enterprises and mutuals

Jennifer is Head of Professional Development at the Chartered Banker Institute and is a Non-Executive Board Director of EBTN (European Banking and Financial Service Training Association).

With responsibility at the Institute for developing strategic qualification and accreditation solutions, and for building collaborative relationships with banking institutes, professional bodies and universities, increasing professionalism in banking is core to her activities.

Having worked in banking for over 20 years before joining the Institute in 2009, Jennifer has been a Chartered Banker for many years.

Marlene Shiels, Chief Executive, was one of the founder members of her credit union, which was established in 1989.

 Marlene was on the Board of Directors for 9 years before joining the staff team in 1998 and has held the position of Chief Executive since 2001.

 Key Career Highlights:

  • October 2019 to present, Chair of the FCA Smaller Business Practitioner Panel.  The first woman to hold this position.
  • March 2020 Chair of the Money and Pensions Advice Service Nation of Savers Challenge Group
  • July 2019 – February 2020 Chair of the Building Societies Workplace Savings Committee
  • 2016 awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List for services to financial services and financial inclusion.
  • In 2017 received the NCUF Lifetime achievement award for services to credit union from her Peers.
  • Founder of the UK DE Programme in 2004.
  • In 2013 became Advisor to HRH the Duchess of Cornwall in matters relating to Credit Unions and financial inclusion
  • 2012 to 2015 served on the Scottish Stepchange Board  
  • In 2009 was elected to serve for a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the World Council of Credit Unions.   She is the only British Person to hold a Board seat on WOCCU.
  • 2009 - 2015 Council Member of the Chartered Banker Institute, as the first lay member.

As Chief Executive of Responsible Finance, Theodora works with her team to increase the provision and awareness of finance from community development finance institutions (CDFIs), so that all businesses, people and communities have access to the finance they need to thrive. Theodora’s previous experience includes working in community finance in the UK and the US. Originally from Greece and having spent many years in the US, she lives in London with her husband and daughter.
